the amount of water that must be provided to the olive-tree by means of irrigation in order to satisfy its needs and which results from the difference between evapotranspiration and the amount of rainwater kept underground for use by the plants.

Example

There are many valuable methods to scientifically estimate the irrigation needs of an olive orchard. In the long run it comes down to the growers common sense (which is increased by experience) to understand whether the orchard needs water or not.
