A fetid, dark-coloured, highly-polluting residue that is extracted olive oil in the traditional and the threephase systems. It consists of water of addition, vegetation water and a minimal fraction of oil and solid remains. Safe disposal of this residue constitutes a major problem. [English: olive mill wastewater]

Example

The improper disposal of OMW to the environment or to domestic wastewater treatment plants is prohibited due to its toxicity to microorganisms, and also because of its potential threat to surface and groundwater.
