vegetative structure of the olive tree that sprouts down into the earth in order to hold the plant firm to the ground and absorb the minerals and water the plant needs to grow and develop.

Example

On coming into contact with a root, the fungus sends out a filament which enters the vascular system of the tree. It develops by branching towards the aerial parts where it impedes sap circulation and causes withering of the part infested.
